Newcastle return to St James’ Park in buoyant mood after that statement 4-1 win at Everton and they look well placed to keep the momentum going in front of their own fans on Tuesday night.
Eddie Howe’s side have turned Tyneside into a fortress again, winning six successive home games in all competitions. Only top-class visitors have left with anything – and even then only just – with narrow defeats to Arsenal and Liverpool in the league and Barcelona in Europe the only real blemishes on their home record this term.
That spells danger for Tottenham, particularly given how this fixture has gone in recent seasons. Newcastle have taken maximum points in six of the last seven meetings with Spurs and have beaten them in each of the last four clashes, including a controlled 2-0 EFL Cup victory when the sides last met at St James’ in October.
Tottenham toiling under pressure
That cup loss was the start of a miserable run for Thomas Frank’s team. Spurs have now been beaten in five of their last seven outings in all competitions and the mood around the club has soured, with loud boos ringing around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after their latest setback – a 2-1 home defeat to Fulham.
Frank’s men have generally travelled better than they have performed at home, picking up the bulk of their Premier League points away, but even that platform has started to crack. Spurs have lost three away games on the bounce in all competitions, one of those coming in that aforementioned cup tie on Tyneside.
Barnes to keep hot streak going
Newcastle’s recent meetings with Spurs have often followed a similar pattern: the Magpies scoring twice and edging tight contests. They have netted exactly two goals in each of their last three victories over the north Londoners, with two of those ending 2-1, and another narrow home success by the same scoreline looks a realistic play.
The hosts have already beaten Manchester City and Fulham 2-1 at St James’ Park in recent weeks, while Spurs are fresh from that 2-1 defeat to Fulham themselves. The visitors still carry enough attacking threat to get on the scoresheet – they have struck in tough away assignments at Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain – but Newcastle should have the sharper cutting edge overall.
Harvey Barnes has been central to that. The winger has been directly involved in seven goals in his last nine Newcastle appearances, finding the net six times in that run, and he looks a lively candidate to punish Spurs again in front of a raucous home crowd.
