Champions League Matchday 4: Villa go to the Camp Nou and United need a win
Five English clubs, two nights, and a halfway point that could shape who goes straight into the last 16.
Three games into the league phase, the English clubs have had a mixed start. Liverpool and Aston Villa have won all three, Arsenal are unbeaten, City recovered from that defeat to PSG, and Man United have lost two in a row. On Tuesday Villa go to Barcelona and United host Roma. On Wednesday Liverpool, City and Arsenal are all on the road. Here’s your programme for the week, with odds courtesy of bet365.

Villa at the Camp Nou, Tuesday 8pm. Nine points from nine and 12 goals scored, but bet365 have them 7/1 against a Barcelona side beaten 4-2 in Paris last time out.

United’s must-win. After defeats to Atlético (2-0) and Como (4-1), United host Roma on three points. Another loss would leave them a long way off the top 24.

The big one · Tuesday 8pmBarcelona v Aston Villa
Villa have been the story of the league phase so far. They won 3-2 in Bruges, beat Fenerbahçe 6-0 and then saw off Viking 3-1, scoring 12 goals in three games. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley have three goals each, according to pre-match reports.
Barcelona scored five against Feyenoord and four in Istanbul, but lost 4-2 at PSG last time out. Lamine Yamal leads the competition for assists. bet365 make Barça 1/4, which is fair enough at home. It just doesn’t give much credit to a side that hasn’t dropped a point.

We’re not brave enough to back Villa to win at the Camp Nou, but we don’t think they’ll roll over either. A side scoring four a game can make this awkward for Barcelona. At 13/2 the draw is a speculative, small-stakes punt.
What could go wrong: Barcelona at home are a different animal, and the market gives them an 80% chance. More often than not, this bet loses.

Tuesday 8pmMan United v Roma
United started with a 4-0 win over Sabah, but they’ve since lost 2-0 in Madrid and 4-1 at Como. Three points from three makes Tuesday a big night at Old Trafford. Only the top eight go straight into the last 16, and sides from ninth to 24th go into a play-off. United are well off the first target and need points to stay in touch with the second.
Roma have four points. They drew 1-1 in Istanbul, lost 4-3 at home to Real Madrid and then beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0. Donyell Malen has three goals and two assists.
An odds-against price for the home side in a game they can’t afford to lose. Roma concede goals, letting in four against Madrid, and we think United have enough at Old Trafford to take advantage.
What could go wrong: United have lost their last two in this competition and conceded six doing it. Confidence is fragile.

Atlético v Bayern & Villarreal v PSG
The closest game on the card is in Madrid. Bayern have drawn their last two, 3-3 at Viking and 2-2 with Arsenal, and Atlético have four points from three. bet365 can barely split them: Atlético 31/20, Bayern 29/20. Holders PSG have won all three, including wins over City and Barcelona, and are 4/7 in Villarreal.

Wednesday 5.45pmFenerbahçe v Liverpool
Liverpool have nine points from nine, though not always the easy way. They beat Atlético 2-1, won 6-3 in Linz and edged Villarreal 4-3. Alexis Mac Allister has three goals. Fenerbahçe have two points from three: draws with Roma and Slavia either side of that 6-0 hammering at Villa Park. It’s an early kick-off in a hostile ground, but on form the gap between these two is wide.
The shortest of our picks, but the one we’re most confident in. Fenerbahçe haven’t won yet, and Liverpool are scoring four a game.
What could go wrong: Liverpool have conceded seven in three, and Istanbul is no place for a slow start. At 8/15 you’re risking a lot to win a little.

Wednesday 8pmSlavia Prague v Arsenal
Arsenal are unbeaten after a 1-0 win in Naples, a 3-0 home win over Lille and a 2-2 draw in Munich. Slavia have one point from three games: they lost to Lens and Sabah, then drew 2-2 with Fenerbahçe.
Arsenal should win this. But 1/4 means staking £20 to win £5, and there’s no appeal in that for us. We’ll enjoy this one without a bet.

RB Leipzig v Man City
City’s only defeat so far was 4-2 at home to PSG. Either side of that, they won 2-0 at Porto and beat AEK 5-1, and Erling Haaland has four goals in two games. Leipzig have three points and lost 4-1 in Madrid last time. City are 4/7, which is about right.
